GEO and AEO: how to optimize content for AI-generated answers, two names for the same reality in 2026: engines answer instead of listing. Generative Engine Optimization targets citations in synthesized answers (Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot); Answer Engine Optimization targets a direct answer to a question, in featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants and, now, generated answers. Both build on traditional SEO and add requirements for clarity, structure and trust.
This guide defines the terms, explains what engines choose, describes the content structure that works, structured data and the brand entity, then measurement and the plan, drawing on what we have observed while tracking clients in assistants monthly.
GEO and AEO: how to optimize content for AI-generated answers
Definitions and the difference from SEO
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | position in the results list | a direct answer to a question (snippet, PAA, voice) | citation or recommendation in the generated answer |
| Unit | the page | the passage | the passage and the entity (brand) |
| Signals | relevance, links, technical factors | answer clarity, structure | brand authority, accuracy, cited sources |
| Result | click | displayed answer, sometimes without a click | mention or link in the answer |
A website can be in position 5 and cited in the answer; or in position 1 and ignored if the passage is vague. The two evaluation systems overlap partly, and the difference lies in what you do with the page after it ranks.
How engines choose sources
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: pages ranked for the subquestions into which the question is broken down; Google says there are no separate requirements.
- ChatGPT with search: Bing results plus its own crawler; passage clarity and source authority.
- Perplexity: its own index, with freshness and mandatory citations.
- Gemini: Google's index plus the knowledge graph; entities matter a great deal.
- Copilot: the Bing index, with a preference for authoritative domains and recent content.
The study "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" (KDD 2024) measured the effect of methods on a set of questions from several fields: citing sources, adding statistics and quotations increased visibility in answers by up to 40%; keyword stuffing reduced it. This is the result we also see in practice.
Content structure
For AEO: the direct answer
- The subheading is the question or statement ("How long does it take for SEO results to appear").
- The first 40-80 words below it are the complete answer, with the subject in the sentence ("The first improvements for commercial phrases appear between the third and sixth month...").
- Then the detail, conditions and exceptions.
- Processes in numbered lists; comparisons in tables; definitions in short sentences.
- An FAQ section with answers of 40-60 words, based on real questions from Search Console and customer conversations.
For GEO: accuracy and trust
- Figures, dates, thresholds, with their source; your own experience ("across 30 clients we saw...").
- Sources cited in the text, linking to official documents; a sources section at the end.
- A real author, with an author page and Person structured data; the update date.
- Brand consistency everywhere: the same name, description and contact details on the website, in the Google Business profile, in directories and in the press.
- External mentions: reviews, interviews, supplier lists; what others say about you is what the models read.
The passage rewriting example and citation analysis are in the articles on adapting content for AI Overviews and AI Mode and organic traffic.
Structured data
There is no "for AI" markup, but clear entities help systems that build knowledge graphs: Organization with sameAs, Person for authors, Article with author and dates, FAQPage for real questions, Service or Product with details, LocalBusiness for businesses with a location. Validate with the structured data validator, without markup for anything that does not exist on the page. The general guide is in the article on schema markup.
Technical access
Engines that do not use Google's index have their own bots (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot); if they are blocked by robots.txt or a protection service (Cloudflare blocks AI bots by default on new domains), the website cannot be cited there regardless of its content. Checks and useful files (llms.txt) are in the article on how to build an AI-indexed website.
How to measure
- Search Console: featured snippets and impressions at a constant position with a falling click-through rate (generated answer above); queries with the brand name (recommendations become direct searches).
- Analytics: referral traffic from assistants (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini, copilot) and its conversions.
- A fixed set of 15-30 questions asked monthly in three assistants, recording the brand's presence; the quarterly trend, because monthly variation is large. We do this in an internal dashboard for each client.
- Paid tools that track citations in AI Overviews are useful for volume, but come with a cost and limited coverage in Romania.
Example: a service page rewritten for answers
An agency's SEO audit page had 900 words about "the importance of an audit" and a form. But the questions people ask assistants about audits are specific: how much it costs, how long it takes, what they receive, what is checked, what they do afterward. The rewrite: five question subheadings, each with the answer in the first two sentences ("An SEO audit for a business website costs between 300 and 900 euros and takes 5-10 working days; the deliverable is a report with..."), a checklist, a table showing the differences between auditing and optimization, an FAQ section and author details. After two months, the page was cited in two of the three assistants for the question "how much does an SEO audit cost in Romania", and form inquiries increased because visitors arrived with their questions already answered. We applied the same model to our own service pages.
AEO for voice assistants and featured snippets
The older part of AEO remains valid: the featured snippet (position zero) is chosen from pages on the first page, based on the passage that answers most directly in 40-60 words under a suitable subheading; lists and tables are taken as they are. People Also Ask shows the questions Google asks around the topic; each deserves a section. Voice assistants read the featured snippet or generated answer; complete sentences without "see below" are the ones that read well. What 2026 brought is that the same passages also feed generated answers, so the effort is made once.
How to prioritize pages
- Commercial pages (services, categories): first, because recommendations from assistants concern providers.
- Articles with high impressions and a falling click-through rate: they are already in the generated-answer area; rewriting passages makes them the cited source.
- FAQ pages and reference guides: they cover subquestions.
- The rest, during the regular update.
What does not work
- Filler text "for AI", invented FAQs, self-assessments ("we are leaders").
- Mechanical repetition of the question in every subheading.
- Mass-generated content without first-party data: a summary of a summary is not cited by a system that summarizes for itself, and Google treats it as scaled content abuse; the explanation is in the article on how Google detects automatically generated content.
- Blocking bots, then asking "why do we not appear".
The 90-day plan
- Month 1: bot access checked; the entity (about us, authors, structured data, aligned profiles); the question set and first measurement; the list of commercial pages to rewrite.
- Month 2: passages below subheadings rewritten as direct answers on 20-30 pages; real FAQs; llms.txt; figures and sources added.
- Month 3: mentions in two or three external sources; new reviews; second measurement; adjustment of the list.
What we track for each client monthly
Three figures and a list: the number of questions in the fixed set where the brand appears (out of 20), referral traffic from assistants with its conversions, the number of queries containing the brand name in Search Console, and the list of competitors appearing in answers instead of the client, with what they have in addition (reviews, displayed prices, mentions). The list is the next month's plan; the figures show whether the previous plan worked. After three months, the pattern is stable and can be reported as a trend.
Frequently asked questions
- Do GEO and AEO replace SEO? No; without positions in indexes, there are neither snippets nor citations.
- What is the practical difference between GEO and AEO on the page? None in structure (direct answer, lists, tables); GEO adds the brand entity and cited sources.
- How long does it take? Weeks for engines with real-time search, months for knowledge from training.
- Is it worth it for a small local business? Yes: assistants recommend local businesses from the Google Business profile and reviews; the two complement each other in the guide to Google Maps and local SEO.
Building the brand as a recommended entity is described at length in the article on Generative Engine Optimization; the initial diagnosis, including bot access, the entity and page structure, is part of the SEO audit.
