How Google Maps influences local SEO in 2025: for a business with a location (practice, shop, restaurant, repair workshop, office), Google Maps and the local pack (the three businesses with a map above the results) often bring more customers than traditional results, because a user searching for "dentist Alba Iulia" wants an appointment, not an article. Maps rankings have their own rules, partly published by Google, and depend more on the Google Business profile than the website.
This guide explains the three official factors, what to complete and maintain in the profile, the role of reviews, the connection with the website, what has changed with generated answers, and the monthly checklist we use for local clients, including our own agency in Alba Iulia.
How Google Maps influences local SEO in 2025
The three local ranking factors
- Relevance: how well the profile matches what the user is searching for; it comes from categories, description, listed services and products, reviews and the website.
- Distance: how close the business is to the search location or the area mentioned; it cannot be optimised, but can be stated correctly (address, service area).
- Prominence: how well known the business is, based on reviews (number, rating, recency), web mentions, links to the website, and the website's rankings in traditional search.
Google explicitly says you cannot pay for a position in Maps and that complete, active profiles are favoured. The rest is maintenance work.
Google Business profile: what to complete
- The company's exact name, without added keywords ("Zâmbet Dental Practice", not "Zâmbet Dental Practice Dentist Alba Iulia Implant"); inflated names are suspended on review.
- The main category, as specific as possible (Dentist, not Clinic), plus genuine secondary categories.
- The full, verified address (by post, telephone or video), with the pin correctly placed on the map; for businesses without public premises, the service area instead of the address.
- Opening hours, including holidays; incorrect hours bring negative reviews.
- Telephone and website: the same number and address as on the website and in all directories (NAP consistency).
- A description of up to 750 characters, stating what you do, for whom and where, without keyword lists.
- Services and products, with indicative prices where possible; they appear in the profile and help relevance.
- Your own photographs: exterior, interior, team, work; at least ten at the start, then a few each month. Profiles with photographs receive more requests for directions and more calls, according to Google's data.
- Attributes (disabled access, card payment, online booking) and frequently asked questions, which you answer yourself before someone else does.
The step-by-step profile guide is in the article on optimising Google Business Profile.
Reviews: the factor you control most
The number, average rating, recency and content of reviews influence prominence and relevance (words in reviews such as "implant", "emergency", "children" matter for matching). What we do: request a review at the right time (after delivery, after a visit), with the short link to the review form, by SMS or email; reply to every review within 48 hours, with the person's name and a specific detail; never buy reviews or have employees write them (Google detects them and suspends the profile). For negative reviews, the calm public reply with a proposed solution is read more closely by future customers than the review; templates are in the article on responding to negative reviews. On our own profile, we chose to display only real Google reviews on the website after removing the fictitious ones left over from the old website; the difference in trust is visible.
The website and profile together
- A contact page with address, telephone, opening hours and embedded map, identical to the profile.
- LocalBusiness structured data (or the appropriate subtype: Dentist, Restaurant, AutoRepair) with name, address, telephone, opening hours, geo, and sameAs pointing to the profile; validated with the structured data validator.
- Service pages with the city in the title and text, with location-specific content (not a template), linked from the profile (website field and links in posts).
- City pages only for places you genuinely serve, with what differs there; template pages drop out of the index.
- Google reviews displayed on the website as text, with name and date; not invented.
- Speed and mobile: most local searches are from a phone, with a direct call from the result.
The website contributes to prominence through its organic rankings; a website on the first page for "dentist alba iulia" pulls the profile up in Maps, and vice versa. The complete strategy is in the article on the benefits of local SEO.
Mentions and directories
Consistency of name, address and telephone across directories (Pagini Aurii, chamber of commerce lists, professional associations, review platforms, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing Places) confirms the business's existence; different details (the old telephone number in one directory, the old address in another) reduce trust. An inventory of mentions and correcting them takes a day and is done once; links from these sources are also the first local links, as we show in the guide to link building strategies.
Posts, questions and messages
Profile posts (offers, news, events) appear in the profile and signal activity; one to two a month are enough. Questions and answers in the profile can be added by anyone; write the genuine frequently asked questions and answers yourself so a stranger does not answer incorrectly. Messages and appointment requests from the profile need a quick reply; Google displays average response time and disables the feature after repeated delays.
What changed with generated answers
AI Overviews and AI Mode display businesses with maps, reviews and review summaries for local searches, taken from Google Business profiles; AI assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini) recommend local businesses based on profiles, reviews and web mentions. The consequence: a complete profile, with many detailed reviews, is also the source for generated recommendations, and review text (what customers say you did well) becomes the business description in the AI answer. How we track presence in assistants is described in the article on Generative Engine Optimization.
An example: a practice in Alba Iulia
A dental practice with a profile created in 2019 and untouched since: category "Clinic", 14 reviews with a 4,1 rating, no replies, four photographs, incorrect hours since the pandemic, and a website without structured data. In three months: main category changed to Dentist, with Orthodontist and Implantologist as secondary categories; opening hours and services completed, with indicative prices; 40 new photographs; review requests sent to patients from the previous two months (rating at 4,7 with 52 reviews, all answered); contact page rebuilt with LocalBusiness and displayed Google reviews; two posts a month. Result, in the profile's performance report: calls from the profile from 22 to 71 a month, requests for directions from 30 to 95, local pack position for "dentist alba iulia" from absent to position 2. The website also rose from the third page to the first for the same search, without any new links; the prominence of the profile and website supports each other.
Service areas and businesses without premises
Plumbers, couriers, cleaning companies and consultants who visit the client have no premises to visit; their profile declares a service area (cities or counties), without a displayed address. Ranking them in Maps is harder because distance cannot be calculated from a point; what matters is reviews mentioning the place ("they came to Sebeș the same day"), service pages for genuine locations, and local mentions. Do not declare a fictitious address (a virtual office, a friend's address) to appear on the map: profiles are verified and suspended, and recovery takes weeks.
Mistakes that cost rankings or the profile
- Keywords in the name, fictitious addresses or post office boxes, multiple profiles for the same location: suspension.
- Fake reviews or review exchanges with other companies: removed, with a risk of suspension.
- A generic or incorrect main category.
- Outdated hours, a telephone nobody answers, a website that does not load on mobile.
- Negative reviews left unanswered for months.
- A profile created and forgotten: no new photographs, posts or replies for a year.
The monthly checklist
- New reviews: reply to each; requests sent to clients from the previous month.
- Two to three new photographs and one post.
- Check information (opening hours, telephone, services) and suggested changes from users, which Google may apply automatically.
- The profile's performance report: searches, views, calls, directions; comparison with last month.
- New unanswered questions.
- Quarterly: inventory of mentions and directories.
For a local business, these 30 minutes a month usually bring more than any other marketing activity; the initial diagnosis (profile, website, mentions, reviews) is part of the SEO audit, and the local SEO service takes over maintenance.
