What is MCP (Model Context Protocol), and how does it help a business?

What is MCP (Model Context Protocol), and how does it help a business? The short answer is that MCP provides a standard way for an artificial intelligence assistant to access the business's real data and tools instead of remaining confined to a chat window.

The term appears increasingly often in Claude guides and the configuration screens of work tools. Below, we explain what it solves, how it works step by step and what to check before connecting a server to business data.

What is MCP (Model Context Protocol), and how does it help a business?

MCP is an open standard published in November 2024 by Anthropic, the company behind Claude. Its role is to connect an artificial intelligence application to the systems the business already uses, from local files to databases.

Before MCP, every combination of an assistant and an external system needed an integration built specifically for it, a pattern that becomes increasingly expensive as the number of assistants and connected systems grows. MCP replaces this pattern with a common interface, similar in principle to standardized REST APIs: each system exposes its data once, and any compatible assistant connects to it without code written specifically for that combination.

How MCP works: clients, servers and resources

MCP (Model Context Protocol) works with a client-server architecture. The application you use, for example Claude Desktop or a compatible code editor, acts as the host and starts an MCP client for each server it connects to.

An MCP server is a separate program that runs locally on the same computer or remotely on a web server. It does not execute anything on its own initiative; it waits for requests from the client and responds with information or the result of an action.

Communication between client and server takes place through structured text messages, sent either through the local process or through web requests when the server is remote. Every action the assistant wants to execute through the server, for example deleting a file or sending a message, requires your approval before it happens.

An MCP server usually offers three types of content to the assistant:

  • Tools: actions the assistant can trigger, such as reading a file or querying a database.
  • Resources: data the assistant can read for context, for example the content of a document.
  • Prompts: ready-made templates provided by the server for tasks that recur frequently.

MCP versus WebMCP: where the similarity ends

The names are similar and confusion is common, especially since we previously wrote about Web Model Context Protocol on this blog. The two solve different problems for different audiences.

MCP connects an artificial intelligence application installed on a computer or server to external systems chosen by the person configuring it, through an MCP server started by the same person. Control remains entirely with the person installing the assistant.

WebMCP starts from the opposite direction: the proposal concerns how a website exposes its own functions to an artificial intelligence agent running within the visitor's browser session, under the website owner's control. If you manage a website and want visiting AI agents to understand its functions correctly, that is where you will find the answer, not in this article.

For a business, the practical distinction is simple. MCP matters when you want to connect your own assistant to internal systems, while WebMCP matters when you want your website to be easy for visiting AI agents to use.

Examples of useful MCP servers for a business

The MCP server ecosystem has grown rapidly since launch and includes official tools as well as tools built by the community or software providers. The right choice depends on the actual task you want to solve, not on how many servers you can install at once.

Internal documents and files

The filesystem server is the most widely used starting example because it gives the assistant controlled access to a particular folder, not the entire computer. From it, the assistant can read, create or organize documents, with your approval for every action.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "filesystem": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem",
        "/cale/catre/folder"
      ]
    }
  }
}

The configuration above is written in the host application's settings file, for example Claude Desktop, and automatically starts the server each time you open the application. For detailed installation and configuration steps, consult the complete Claude guide on the blog.

The topic is close to another common question, about the files AI agents read when they visit your website. The two should not be confused: one concerns your own computer, the other the public website.

Calendars, notes and communication

The official MCP documentation gives connecting to Google Calendar and Notion as current examples, so the assistant can find meetings or documents without you manually entering the data in the conversation. Businesses using internal communication tools often find similar servers for them.

  • Local files and documents, for controlled reading and organization.
  • Calendars and notes, for context about meetings and current tasks.
  • Internal communication applications, for searching conversations and shared files.
  • Databases, for direct queries without manual export.
  • Development and error monitoring tools, useful for technical teams.

MCP and visibility in AI-based search engines

Engines that generate answers rather than just lists of links read the business's content through automated agents, not human eyes. An MCP server connected to internal systems can help the marketing team prepare this content faster, not replace content written by a person.

For example, an assistant connected to the product database can generate an initial specifications table, which the writer checks and corrects before publication. Website structure for agents remains a separate topic, explained at length in the guide to an AI-indexed website.

If the business's goal is to be recommended directly in answers generated by tools such as Claude or ChatGPT, the right topic to read about is optimization for generative engines, not MCP configuration. The two complement each other, but solve different stages of the same process.

How a business starts using MCP

For a business owner, MCP is not something to install personally, but a criterion to check when choosing a new artificial intelligence tool or automation provider. The useful question to ask a provider is simple: does the proposed system speak MCP, or does it require an integration built from scratch?

The first technical step belongs to the person actually configuring the application: identify a single repetitive task that consumes real time every week and look for an existing MCP server for it. Installing every possible server on day one leads to confusion, not productivity.

  1. Choose a compatible host application, for example Claude Desktop or Claude Code, and confirm the installed version.
  2. Identify an MCP server suited to the chosen task, from an official or known source, not an unfamiliar repository.
  3. Edit the application's configuration file and add the server, with access strictly limited to what is necessary.
  4. Restart the application and check its logs to confirm that the server connected correctly.
  5. Test the server on a real task and manually approve every requested action, at least during the first week.

Expand the server list only after the first one works reliably and the team understands how to approve actions. One server used correctly brings more value than five servers installed and ignored.

Technical teams also find MCP integrations in code editors useful, where the server can query internal documentation or the bug tracking system directly from the coding workflow. For teams without technical knowledge, starting with Claude Desktop and a single filesystem server remains the simplest option.

Risks and checks before connecting an MCP server

An MCP server runs with the permissions of the account that starts it, so it can access everything that account can access. For this reason, the access granted must be strictly limited to the folder, account or database needed for the task, never the entire system.

Before connecting an MCP server to business data, check these points.

  • The package source is official or you know it directly; it is not an anonymous repository.
  • Access to files or accounts is limited to what the task strictly requires.
  • Every action requested by the assistant goes through your approval rather than executing automatically.
  • For remote servers, authentication is configured correctly, not left open.

If the connected server reads personal data, for example from a CRM or customer database, the same data protection obligations apply as with any other software integration. Document which server has access to which data, just as you would document any other provider processing it.

The host application's logs show exactly which requests each server sent and when, which helps detect unusual behavior. If a server requests broader access than the task needs, the safest decision is not to install it.

MCP is not a passing trend, but a standard that major artificial intelligence providers have already adopted widely, a sign that integrations built on it are likely to remain useful in the long term. For a business in Romania, the most realistic starting point is a single server connected to one clear task, tested by one person.

If the actual task is to write better instructions for the assistant, the AI prompt generator reduces the work of starting from scratch. For businesses that want to connect these automations to real results in Google, our team offers technical SEO services and SEO adapted to your website.
