Guide to connecting your website to Google Search Console, the free tool through which Google tells you how it sees your website: which pages are indexed, which searches they appear for, and what problems it has found. Without it, you are doing SEO by guesswork. Connecting takes 15 minutes and only needs to be done once; this guide shows the property types, verification methods with steps for cPanel and WordPress, what to configure straight afterwards, and common mistakes.
We assume you have a Google account (preferably the company's, not one belonging to someone who might leave) and access to the domain's DNS or the website's files.
Guide to connecting your website to Google Search Console
Property types
- Domain property (Domain): covers all variants (http, https, www, subdomains) in a single report; verification only through a DNS record. Recommended as the main property.
- URL prefix property (URL prefix): covers exactly the variant entered (https://www.exemplu.ro/); verification through several methods. Useful as an additional property for language versions in subdirectories (https://www.exemplu.ro/en/) or when you do not have DNS access.
The best setup: a domain property plus URL prefix properties for the sections you want to view separately.
Verification methods
1. DNS record (for the domain property)
- In Search Console, select Add property, Domain, and enter exemplu.ro (without https or www).
- Copy the TXT record shown (google-site-verification=…).
- In cPanel, select Domains, Zone Editor, Manage for the domain, Add Record, type TXT, name exemplu.ro (or @), the copied value, and the default TTL; Save. If the DNS is at Cloudflare or the registrar, add the record there; the steps for Zone Editor are in the guide to Zone Editor for DNS.
- Return to Search Console and click Verify. Propagation takes from minutes to a few hours; if it fails, wait and try again without deleting the record.
Never delete the record after verification: Google rechecks periodically, and its disappearance means losing the property.
2. HTML file (URL prefix)
Download the verification file, upload it to the website's root (public_html) through File Manager or SFTP, check that it opens at https://www.exemplu.ro/google…html, then Verify. The file stays on the server.
3. Meta tag (URL prefix)
Copy the meta tag and put it in the home page's head: on WordPress, through the SEO plugin (Yoast and Rank Math have a dedicated field) or the theme settings; on other platforms, in the header template. Verify. The tag must remain.
4. Google Analytics (URL prefix)
If the website already has the GA4 code installed under the same Google account (with edit permissions), Search Console recognises it; Verify. GA4 setup is covered in the guide to Google Analytics 4.
5. Google Tag Manager (URL prefix)
With the GTM container installed and publishing permissions in the account, as with Analytics.
Our rule: DNS for the domain property, plus a meta tag or file for additional URL prefixes; Analytics and Tag Manager are backups because they depend on other accounts.
On WordPress, in brief
- In the SEO plugin's site verification section: paste the code from Google's meta tag.
- In Search Console, a URL prefix property for https://www.exemplu.ro/ (exactly the canonical variant), the HTML tag method, Verify.
- Then add the domain property through DNS, as above.
- In the SEO plugin, enable the XML sitemap and copy its address (usually sitemap_index.xml).
What to do immediately after verification
- Submit the sitemap: Indexing, Sitemaps, the sitemap address, Submit; check for Success status after a few hours. What the sitemap should contain is covered in the guide to submitting the XML sitemap.
- Add users: Settings, Users and permissions; give the agency or collaborator Full permissions, not Owner; the company remains the owner.
- Associate with Google Analytics (Settings, Associations), so search data also appears in GA4.
- Check the page indexing report: how many pages are indexed compared with how many you have, and the reasons for those not indexed; interpretation is covered in the guide to coverage reports.
- Check Security issues and Manual actions: empty, we hope.
- Set the email address for notifications (in account preferences) to one that is read.
Performance data starts accumulating from verification; for a new website, the first useful reports appear after two to four weeks. For an established website, Google shows up to 16 months of history before verification, if the website was already being crawled.
What you see in the first week and what it means
The performance report starts showing impressions and clicks two to three days after verification (the data is delayed) and includes earlier history if Google was already crawling the website. The page indexing report shows the status of all known URLs from the start; on a new website, most are "Discovered, currently not indexed" for a few days or weeks, which is normal. Crawl statistics (Settings, Crawl stats) appear after a few days and show whether Googlebot reaches the website without errors; a red Host status in the first week means something is blocking the bot (firewall, robots.txt, DNS). Do not draw conclusions about rankings from the first week; compare after 28 days.
Verification through an agency or collaborator
If an agency verified the website with its own account, the property belongs to it, and you have access only for as long as it grants it. Ask for verification through the company's account (or for the company's account to be added as Owner, followed by its own DNS verification), and give the agency Full permissions. When changing agencies, revoke access in Users and permissions and check Ownership verification for any remaining verification methods belonging to others (HTML files, old meta tags), which you can remove from the website. The Search Console property is a company asset, like the domain.
Connections with other Google tools
- Google Analytics 4: the association brings search reports into GA4 and allows comparison with conversions.
- Google Business Profile: for local businesses, the profile connects to the website through the website field and is verified separately; setup is covered in the guide to optimising Google Business Profile.
- Google Ads: linking with Search Console shows, in Ads, the queries for which you appeared organically and in paid results at the same time.
- Merchant Center: for shops, website verification can be carried out through Search Console.
Common mistakes
- A URL prefix property for the wrong variant (http instead of https, without www when the website uses www): empty reports.
- Verification with an employee's personal account, lost when they leave: use the company's account and add people as users.
- The TXT record or meta tag deleted "during a clean-up": the property becomes unverified.
- A sitemap not submitted or submitted with the wrong address (http, or the old static sitemap).
- A domain with DNS at the registrar, but the record added in cPanel's Zone Editor, where it has no effect: check where the nameservers are, following the guide to basic DNS settings.
- Expecting traffic from Search Console: the tool does not bring traffic, it measures it; what you do with the data is the rest of the work.
How to check that everything is connected
- The domain property shows "Verified" in Settings, Ownership verification, with the DNS method.
- Sitemaps shows the sitemap with Success and a discovered page count close to the actual number.
- The performance report has data after a few days (for websites with traffic).
- URL inspection (the field at the top) reports for the home page: indexed, self-canonical.
- In GA4, Search Console reports appear in Acquisition after association and after publishing them from the library.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Search Console cost anything? No; it is free, with no limit on properties.
- Does verification get the website into Google? No; crawling and indexing do that, and happen anyway. Verification gives you reports and the ability to request indexing.
- How long does it retain data? 16 months in the interface; for longer, bulk export to BigQuery.
- Can I verify a website I do not control? No, not without access to its DNS, files or code; the owner can add you as a user.
- I have verified it, but the reports are empty after a week: the property is for the wrong variant (http, without www) or the website has not yet been crawled; check with URL inspection.
What Search Console does not do
It does not show traffic from other search engines or AI assistants, conversions, real-time rankings, or every query (rare ones are hidden). Each of these has another tool (Bing Webmaster Tools, Analytics, a rank tracking tool), while Search Console remains the source for the website's relationship with Google.
For multiple websites or languages
Each domain gets a domain property; each language version in a subdirectory gets an additional URL prefix property; subdomains are covered by the domain property but can also have their own URL prefix for separate reports. On our website, the goai.ro domain property plus URL prefixes for /en/ and /de/ let us compare language versions in separate reports. Bing's tools (Bing Webmaster Tools) import properties from Search Console with one click, as we show in the article on Google versus Bing.
After connecting, each report has its purpose and a reading routine; they are described one by one in the complete guide to Google Search Console. And if the website does not appear in Google at all after connecting and submitting the sitemap, the usual causes are in the article on common indexing errors.
