Effective strategies to increase organic traffic, meaning visits from search that you do not pay for per click and that continue after you stop every campaign. This guide brings together the nine strategies that have produced growth on our clients' sites, with the order in which we apply them, the figures we have seen and what no longer works in 2026, when some informational clicks are moving to AI-generated answers.
Organic traffic has a property other channels lack: it accumulates. A good, ranked page brings visits for months or years; that is why the strategies below are ordered by their impact over time, not by the speed of the first result.
Effective strategies to increase organic traffic
1. Start with what you have: pages "almost at the top"
Search Console, performance report, filter for positions 4-15 with high impressions: these are the pages where an improvement delivers the most, because the difference between position 8 and position 3 is four to five times as many clicks for the same impressions. For each one: identify what is missing compared with the pages above it (the direct answer, figures, experience, images, updates), then rewrite it and add internal links to it. This is the fastest strategy, with effects in 4-8 weeks, and the first we apply; the report guide is in the article on Google Search Console.
2. Content based on intent, not words
Each page fully answers a single need. Explanatory articles (awareness), comparisons (interest) and service pages with processes and prices (consideration) each have their role and their words. The list starts with real questions, using the method in the article on keyword research, and every new page has a main phrase that does not already exist on the site; two pages on the same topic compete with one another and both lose.
3. Expansion and consolidation
On older sites, half the pages are thin or duplicates and drag down the assessment of the entire site. We applied exactly this process on our own blog: 54 articles under 600 words expanded to 1.400-1.700, with sources and links, and 13 pairs of articles on the same topic consolidated with redirects. The expected result, based on client experience: an increase in indexed pages out of those submitted, followed by impressions, within two or three months. How to identify duplicates is covered in the article on duplicate content.
4. Technical work as hygiene
Clean indexing (no accidental noindex, no blocks, a correct sitemap), mobile speed in the good range, HTTPS, no redirect chains and structured data. These do not bring traffic alone, but their absence cancels out everything else; the steps are in the guide to optimising a site step by step, and indexing errors are in the article on common indexing errors.
5. Purposeful internal links
The most underestimated strategy, because it is free. Each article links to the relevant service page and two or three related articles, with descriptive anchors; commercial pages are at most three clicks from the home page; no page is orphaned. On one client's 200-page site, rebuilding internal links moved five service pages from the second results page to the first, without a single new external link.
6. Earned external links
A few relevant domains per month, through content worth citing, partners, the press, associations and industry directories. Not through buying them. The effect appears in two to four months and is visible on the target pages; methods are in the guide to link building strategies.
7. Local, for businesses with a location
A complete Google Business Profile, with genuine reviews and responses, city pages with specific content (not templates with the name changed), LocalBusiness structured data and local mentions. For many small businesses, local traffic is more valuable than national traffic because it comes with purchase intent; the guides are in the articles on the benefits of local SEO and Google Business Profile optimisation.
8. Update what works
An article bringing traffic loses some year after year if it is not updated: old figures, vanished tools, new versions. A review schedule (pages with the most impressions, once every 6-12 months), with new data, new sections and a visible update date, maintains and improves rankings; Google favours updated pages for changing subjects.
9. Presence in AI answers
For simple questions, the click is lost to AI Overviews; for the rest, the cited source receives a more qualified click. The strategy: direct answers under subheadings, figures, a real author, clear entities and brand mentions outside the site. This is not a separate channel but an adaptation of content, described in the article on AI Overviews; traffic from assistants is measured in Analytics as referral traffic.
Commercial pages, the priority in 2026
Informational traffic is declining across the market because of generated answers; commercial traffic (searches with intent to buy or make contact) remains because the user wants a supplier, not a summary. The strategic consequence: service, category and product pages receive more effort than before, with content answering "how much does it cost", "how do you work", "who is it for" and "what do customers say", while informational articles become their support, not the goal. On our own site we rewrote the home and service pages with a staged process and genuine reviews after Search Console analysis showed that 99% of query-page pairs with clicks were commercial.
Branded keywords, the sign that the strategy works
A successful organic traffic strategy also shows in increased searches for the company's name: people have heard of you through articles, mentions and recommendations, and return by searching directly. Monitor branded queries separately in Search Console; their slow, steady growth is the best indicator of real authority, while their absence on a site with high informational traffic shows that visitors read and leave without remembering who wrote it.
What no longer works
- 500-word articles on "keywords", at volume: we expanded or redirected these on our own site too.
- Template-generated city pages: they drop out of the index as duplicates.
- Bought links and private networks: targeted by spam updates.
- Mass-generated content without checking or experience: the scaled content abuse policy.
- "Keyword density" and hidden text: these have not worked for ten years.
- Expecting informational traffic as it was before AI Overviews: move effort to commercial pages and experience-based content.
Order and timelines
| Stage | What to do | When it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | technical work, pages "almost at the top", internal links, consolidation | 4-8 weeks |
| Months 2-3 | new intent-based commercial pages, local work, first links | 2-4 months |
| Months 3-6 | reference content, expansions, updates | 3-6 months |
| Months 6-12 | authority: links, mentions, AI presence | 6-12 months |
On client sites, non-branded organic traffic growth in the first year is usually between 40% and 150%, depending on the starting point; sites starting from almost zero grow more in percentage terms, but with small absolute numbers. Anyone promising to double traffic in three months on a site with real competition is talking about something else.
What to do with a limited time budget
A small business realistically has four to eight hours per month for in-house SEO. We divide them like this: one hour on Search Console (pages almost at the top, new queries, errors), two or three hours on an improved or consolidated page, two hours on a new article with first-hand experience, one hour on internal links and a request for a link or mention. Repeated for twelve months, this programme produces more than a three-month campaign followed by nothing; organic traffic rewards consistency.
How to measure correctly
Non-branded clicks (a negative filter on the company name), over 28 days compared with the preceding 28 and the previous year; number of queries with impressions; rankings for a fixed set of phrases; organic conversions in Analytics. Not total traffic (it includes the brand, which grows for other reasons) and not the overall average position. The method is the one in the article on measuring the impact of an update, applied monthly.
Three examples
A professional services practice with 40 pages and 300 visits a month: rewriting the pages "almost at the top", adding five new intent-based service pages and completing the Google Business Profile brought 1.100 visits a month in eight months, with twice as many quote requests. A shop with 2.000 products: consolidating filter duplicates and rewriting 200 descriptions copied from the manufacturer brought 38% more product impressions in three months. A company blog with 300 thin articles: expanding 60 and removing 90 increased traffic by 25% in four months, with fewer pages. In every case, the work started with Search Console, not a keyword list.
